If you’re missing teeth, you’ve likely heard about the benefits of dental implants in Gahanna. Although you’d like to enjoy a nearly perfect replica of your natural teeth, it’s normal to be concerned about the process. You’ll need oral surgery to strategically place an implant post into your jawbone to serve as a new root. Although it might sound painful, you don’t have anything to fear. Here’s what you can expect while on your journey to a complete smile.
Dental Implant Surgery
After undergoing a consultation and healing from any previous treatments, you’ll be scheduled for your implant placement surgery. Sedation or anesthesia is used to ensure you’re comfortable during the procedure. Once you’re sedated, your dentist will open your gum tissue to insert a titanium post into your jawbone. Your tissue will be sutured closed, and you’ll begin the healing process. Not only will you not feel any pain, but you may not even remember your appointment.
Recovering from Dental Implant Surgery
Once your sedation or anesthetic wears off, you can expect there to be some discomfort; however, many patients report it to be less than that of a tooth extraction. It’s best to take any prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as recommended to keep your discomfort under control.
There to be some swelling and bruising, which will decrease by the third day. Applying a cold compress to the outside of your face will minimize both while also lessening any pain. Your dentist will recommend sticking to a soft diet for a few days after your dental implant surgery. As your mouth heals over the next week or two, you can slowly introduce harder foods, but avoid those that have sharp edges, like taco shells and chips.
You shouldn’t have any more pain after about 2 to 3 weeks following your surgery; however, your jawbone is still healing. It will take several weeks for your bone to fuse to the post through a process called osseointegration.
Pain After Restoration Phase
Once your bone has integrated with the post, you’ll undergo a minor procedure to connect an abutment to the implant. A local anesthetic is used, so any discomfort will be minimal. Your gums will be healed in about 2 weeks, at which point you’ll have your restoration attached to the abutment. Now that the process is complete, you shouldn’t experience any pain, even when biting or chewing.
